31st May, 2005 – Yerevan: Henrik Bakhchinyan, Director of the State Museum of Arts and Literature, and Alexan Zakyan,
President of the ‘Manana’ Public Beneficial Organization, signed an “Agreement on Joint Activity” for the proposed establishment of a Hovhaness Research Center, to be built within the Museum, as well as an Alan Hovhaness Hall also within the Museum itself.
The coordinator of the proposed Research Center will be Alexan Zakyan and it will maintain a not-for-profit purpose of “spreading and teaching the cultural inheritance of Alan Hovhaness”. Details were drawn up with regard to ways of funding, construction and interior design of the Research Center, and possible establishment of relationships with other institutions.
The Center will be the first stage in an ambitious project which aims for the eventual establishment of a Hovhaness Museum. Necessary "materials, registrations and territory" must be forthcoming before the Armenian government will confer the status of a distinct museum, and it is hoped that the Museum of Literature and Art will support this cause.
Before the Center itself can be inaugurated, a permanent Alan Hovhaness Hall is planned to be established within the present museum, to serve as a venue for concert presentations, educational and/or cultural meetings as well as displaying exhibits. The concert grand piano which belonged to the revered Armenian composer Komitas is in this hall and will be restored.
