Hovhaness plays cross-legged on hichiriki in a Gagaku ensemble performing at Honolulu's Japanese Chamber of Commerce.

In his correspondence of the time, the composer enthusiastically described his experiences of playing Gagaku instruments as "awe-inspiring".
