|Gagaku Lecture-recital, East-West Center
Hovhaness and his then-wife, Elizabeth, studied the ancient Gagaku instruments with Masatoshi Shamoto whilst in Hawaii. Below, they perform as a trio in a lecture-recital at the Univeristy of Hawaii.
Left to right: Shamoto on ryuteki (bamboo "dragon flute"), Hovhaness on hichiriki (an oboe-like double-reeded melody instrument) and Mrs. Hovhaness on shō (harmony instrument).
