|Holding a Javanese Rebab, East-West Center, Hawaii
For six months in 1962, Hovhaness was a Senior Visiting Scholar and Composer in Residence at the University of Hawaii's East-West Center. He conducted several of his works at the Festival of Music and Art of This Century, including the premiere of his dance drama Wind Drum, Op.183.
The instrument pictured would normally be bowed, being a sort of two-stringed violin.
