With pianist Maro Ajemian, c.1947

Armenian-American Maro Ajemian was the first pianist to champion Hovhaness, giving several dozen premieres and premiere recordings of his music. By 1957 she had clocked up almost 40 recordings, many with her violinist sister Anahid for the MGM label.

She fearlessly championed many living American composers in the 1940s and '50s. Amongst her notable premieres were the prepared piano sonatas of John Cage, which she first performed at a New York concert that included her and Hovhaness performing his Mihr for two pianos.
