April 2003
Cello Concerto*
Symphony No.22 'City of Light'
Seattle Symphony, * cello: Janos Starker
conducted by Alan Hovhaness, * Dennis Russell Davies
Naxos 8.559158 Timing 60:49
This lyrical 1937 Cello Concerto waited almost 60 years for a premiere recording. It is coupled with a previously-released 1970 symphony, betraying the composer's charming melodic writing and characteristic ethereal mysticism.

February 2003
Symphony No.15 'Silver Pilgrimage' Concerto No.7 for Orchestra Magnificat*
Louisville Orchestra / Robert Whitney
*with University of Louisville Choir & SATB Soloists
FECD-0006 Timing 71:35
A long-awaited release the best available recordings of Magnificat and Symphony No.15 plus the earliest recording of the masterly Concerto No.7. Three premiere recordings reissued from old LP discs, with the composer's original program notes.
Ken Smith wrote in the Newark Star-Ledger: "Of all the [Hovhaness] releases that have come out ... the most valuable is from the Louisville Orchestra, released on First Edition Music. Other orchestras may play better ... but few give you a sense of the man's place in musical history.
Because Hovhaness' music radiates a sense of inner (not to say mystical) calm that makes it seem timeless, it's a bit of a jolt to realize that some of these pieces, which sound as fresh and contemporary as Arvo Pδrt or John Tavener, were written nearly a half century ago".

ORIENTAL LANDSCAPES
Hovhaness - Fantasy on Japanese Woodprints
Musgrave: Journey Through a Japanese Landscape
Chen Yi: Percussion Concerto
Zhou Long: Out of Tang Court
Evelyn Glennie, xylophone, marimba & percussion
Singapore Symphony Orchestra conducted by Lan Shui
BIS-CD-1222 Timing 69:11
As the title implies, there is an Oriental or rather Asian theme to this CD. Two of them, including the Hovhaness, are inspired by Japan.
